Apple quietly builds a retail store in Perth

Apple is close to unveiling its seventh retail outlet store in the heart of Australia's westernmost state capital.

The parcel of land on Hay Street, formerly a pastry shop, has an area of just over 800 square metres. Construction is well under way, with what appears to be a two to three storey shopfront already being erected in early December [see photo gallery top right].

A spokesman for Apple refused to provide comment on when the shop would open.

The new location puts Apple in the heart of Perth - making it one of the most accessible Apple stores in the country. Of Apple's other six Australian stores, only one has a CBD location - the flagship store on George Street in Sydney. The others are all located within shopping centres.

The Hay Street location gives Apple the best of both worlds - with a central location that is also close to the shopping district at Hay Street Mall.

Recruitment of staff for Perth's Apple Store has been in progress for about six months. Once a new staff member is recruited, they undergo several weeks of training to learn about the full range of Apple's products.

At Apple Store openings elsewhere in the country, fans have queued the night before, hoping  to be the first into the store to receive a limited edition T-shirts.
