The decision to open an office came about 12 months ago, when the distributor saw the city as the one of the last mainland areas it needed to cover.
Kevin Hartin, marketing manager at Altech, told CRN, that the office now completes its presence state-wide.
“We had been servicing Adelaide from Melbourne and Sydney, that worked well enough,” he said.
“Adelaide might be small but it presents a number of key product opportunities. For example no one is doing Antec in the region and it does very well in every area we put it in.
“There’s also no warehouses holding Micorsoft OEM products and that provides a point of differentiation for the guys over there.”
Chris Potts will head the office as the, SA branch manager, said Hartin.
“The warehouse is around 1200sq metres and has a central location in Mile End, Adelaide,” said Potts.
According to Hartin, with the exception of Canberra it now has a presence in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA and now South Australia.
“However we aren’t in Canberra and I can’t see Altech opening a Canberra office,” said Hartin.
“Corporate government resellers are based there and that’s not where we are at.”
Earlier this year, the distributor also opened an office in Auckland, NZ and Hong Kong.
“We should be able to handle around 70 percent of services from our Auckland base,” he said.
“I can’t see us opening any offices in the South Island. It has its own challenges in terms of logistics and it would be difficult to justify an office on that basis.”
