The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has warned of scammers claiming to be from Optus, using phishing emails to collect credit card information.
The email is disguised as an unpaid bill asking for credit card information, with the subject line: “We are unable to process your last payment”.
ACMA said the fake emails are “sophisticated” and use a web address similar to the real Optus website, containing a phishing link to a fake “pay your bill” page.
“The fake email and payment form are cunningly crafted to trick people,” ACMA said.
“It’s important you check the legitimacy of email links to protect your personal information—use contact details you find through a legitimate source and not those contained in the suspicious message.”
ACMA advised recipients to delete the emails immediately.
In July, the government issued a warning against phishing emails from scammers claiming to be from Medicare, asking recipients to update their electronic funds transfer details to receive Medicare benefits and claims.
The link contained in the email takes recipients to a website that looks similar to the actual myGov website but with a .net domain address, rather than the actual .gov.au domain.
