Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 unboxed and tested

After a year of uncontested dominance, the Apple iPad is about to meet its first real challenger in the form of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1. We got our hands on the Vodafone-exclusive model last week - the Galaxy Tab 10.1v. Read on to discover our first impressions of the device.

The model we tested was fresh off the production line - so fresh, that it wasn't even boxed. Our review unit came with a power cable (which doubles as a USB connector) and carry slipcase.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1v is 10.9mm thick; slightly thicker than the iPad 2, which measures 8.6mm.

Connectivity is limited on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v: comprising a headphone jack (pictured) and USB output. There are no expandable memory options on this model.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v has an inbuilt microphone for making video calls and the like.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1v's power charger doubles as a USB connector: just like Samsung's smartphone range.

One of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v's main claims to fame is its 8.0 megapixel camera. This is a huge improvement over the Apple iPad 2, which offers a 0.7MP camera.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v takes around 40 seconds to boot up. A Samsung animation plays in the interim.

Websites look crisp and vibrant on the Galaxy Tab's 10.1in 1280x800 WXGA touch screen. Viewing angles are also solid.

Like the Apple iPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v can be used in 'landscape' or 'portrait' mode. (The screen automatically realigns when you rotate the device.) The majority of apps and programs work best in landscape mode, but the option to switch is there, should you need it.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1v runs on the latest version of Google's Android operating system: 3.0 Honeycomb. One of the new features of Honeycomb is five customisable home screens. This makes it a lot easier to manage your programs, widgets and apps.

The Android Marketplace is currently home to over 100,000 apps. Applications designed specifically for tablets are currently thin on the ground, but all the smartphone apps we tested looked supurb and worked perfectly.

You can easily flick between applications and browser windows using the drop down menu.

We were especially enamored by the game Angry Birds, which benefits hugely from the larger display.

Special mention must also go to the YouTube app, which benefits from a snazzy 3D scrolling interface. We think it looks and works better than the real website.

Using the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v as a camera isn’t as awkward or cumbersome as you’d expect. In fact, we quite like the way it handles, with the 10in display providing an excellent view of subjects and surrounding scenery.

The photo capture button is located to the right of the screen within easy reach of the thumb. Other popular functions, such as colour filters, white balance, scene modes and an 8x digital zoom are just a quick fingertap away.

We found image quality to be a bit of a mixed bag, but for the most part we were satisifed with our photos. The Auto mode sometimes caused red eye in our subjects, but the Portrait mode fared a lot better.

The Galaxy Tab 10.v's camera does not come with any inbuilt editing options, although there are plenty of free apps available in the Android Marketplace.

In this photo, we've used the free app PicSay to add a speech bubble.

This picture gives you an idea of the screen's reflective glare. Despite the glossy sheen, it's still possible to use the device in sunlight.

As with any touch screen device, fingerprints are an issue with the Galaxy Tab 10.1v. A cleaning cloth is definitely recommended.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v will be available available exclusively through Vodafone from mid-April, for an RRP of $729. Alternatively, it can be bundled as part of a Vodafone plan for a $259 upfront payment, plus $39 per month over 12 months (includes 1.5GB of data per month).
