Microsoft announces channel-only Surface Pro 3 bundle

Microsoft has shown its commitment to the Surface Pro line of tablets with a range of accessories that will fit with an as-yet unconfirmed next generation of the device.

The vendor also stressed continuing support for Windows 8.1 as it launched a new reseller-exclusive Surface 3 package aimed at the SMB market.

In a blog post, the vendor's general manager for Surface, Brian Hall, launched a new "Surface laptop replacement bundle" only available through authorised resellers.

"We’re introducing a limited-time Surface laptop replacement bundle with our reseller partners that provides up to US$150 off of a Surface Pro 3, type cover and docking station when purchased together," wrote Hall in the blog.

"This is available through our authorised resellers in the US starting immediately, and in the majority of markets where Surface is available worldwide in the coming weeks."

In Australia, only 14 resellers are currently authorised to sell the Surface Pro 3: Dimension Data, Brennan IT, Triforce, Trident, Insight, Ensyst, Somerville, Staples, Stott & Hoare, ASI, Datacom, Data#3, e-Volve, and Learning with Technologies.

Hall said that Microsoft is anticipating "small and medium businesses to see tremendous value" in the bundle.

The executive also said that Surface Pro 3 accessories would remain compatible with the next generation of tablets, seeking to assure customers and resellers of the device's longevity.

"Now that we have begun to establish our place in the market, we are pleased to share that the following Surface Pro 3 accessories are designed with our product roadmap in mind and will be compatible with the next generation of the Pro line of Surface," wrote Hall, referring to the Surface Pro 3 type covers, "infrastructure" accessories like power adapter, and the docking station.

"This commitment helps validate an investment in Surface Pro 3 and solidifies Microsoft’s overall commitment to the continued growth of the Surface brand."

The blog post said that the Surface Pro 3 would continue to support Windows 8.1 and be upgrade-compatible once Windows 10 is available.

Hall wrote that Microsoft is making the commitment to Surface on the back of strong take-up by business clientele. "We are excited about the growing commercial adoption of Surface."
