Telstra is spending tens of millions on a joint venture that it hopes could one day see it connecting systems for monitoring home heating or alarms that monitor home owners' health.
The TelstraSNP Monitoring joint venture with 90-year old security company SNP Security will see the carrier provide monitored security for business and residential customers.
A Telstra spokesperson confirmed that the company was spending "tens of millions" on the joint venture, as reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.
This will be the first time Telstra has offered monitored security to the residential market, a spokesperson confirmed to CRN.
The carrier has its eyes on "untapped areas of growth" in the monitored security business.
This could one day include controlling heating and cooling or unlocking doors for tradespeople to enter or for parcels to be delivered, a Telstra spokesperson said.
Types of products also being considered include cloud analytics, environmental monitoring, and health and safety alarms.
Telstra Business Group managing director Will Irving said it was an opportunity for customers to get more from monitored services.
“Together we will provide an unrivalled set of productivity tools for small and medium businesses and great peace of mind and remote management options for households," Irving said.
