Venn IT Solutions sends property analyst CoreLogic into the cloud with Commvault backup and disaster recovery

Queensland's Venn IT Solutions has helped property analytics firm CoreLogic replace its tape-based legacy record keeping infrastructure and brought added capability and efficiency with a Commvault disaster recovery solution.

Formerly known as RP Data, CoreLogic has 11,000 customers and 120,000 end users. Throughout Australia’s property boom, the company was in need of a new way to manage the huge volumes of data required for its property database, a library of information spanning 40 years that is constantly being updated.

“Data is our lifeblood. Without our data – and strategies to protect it – we fundamentally have no business and are unable to provide the accurate insights our customers expect,” CoreLogic head of ICT Adrian Jansz said.

CoreLogic engaged Venn IT to seek a new way to handle data protection. The Brisbane IT supplier quickly identified a number of challenges impeding CoreLogic’s full potential.

Mostly notably, CoreLogic had a varied array of databases and information systems acquired through mergers that were not integrated.

An increase of 600 data sources over the past 10 years and new means of end-user delivery also challenged the organisation to integrate new data into its existing information distribution architecture. With new customer-produced data daily, CoreLogic needed a cost-effective and efficient way to store and backup.

Venn IT set to work investigating the costs of maintaining a tape-based data storage solution versus a cloud-based approach and investigate some future plans and collection with CoreLogic ICT staff.

After CoreLogic opted to move away from tape and migrate into the cloud, the company engaged Venn IT in partnership with Commvault and Amazon Web Services to deploy a solution combining on-premises and cloud data protection and disaster recovery with AWS S3, Glacier and EC2.

By having an easy-to-access data solution, CoreLogic was able to accelerate the delivery of new products to the market.

The Venn IT solution is expected to significantly reduce CoreLogic’s annual data environment spend as well as achieve savings by freeing up staff to undertake new projects.

“Now it’s not just our servers and platforms, but also our desktops and laptops that we backup to cloud. Our backup engineers were reskilled to ensure we’ve got greater velocity through product releases and improved IT security,” CoreLogic’s Jansz said.

“Our backup strategy is critical to our business, as it allows us to focus on other areas that provide more value for customers. With the shift to cloud and digital business models, CoreLogic will cut its innovation cycle time to engage emerging opportunities in the expanding Australian property market and provide customers with superior experiences.

Commvault Australia and New Zealand vice president Dan Kieran said his team were proud to see CoreLogic accelerate its business transformation while protecting its intellectual property.

“While there are a range of solutions in the market to help manage and backup data, our software provides a converged solution that takes customers all the way from data protection to accessing backed up data at a granular level, to peer inside of it and activate its value even while it’s at rest. This delivers huge productivity gains, and makes customers more agile and better able to anticipate hyper-fast market conditions,” he said.
