TPG Telecom picks up largest smart metering project in Australia

TPG Telecom has clinched a massive 10-year deal with South East Water in Victoria to manage one million narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) smart meters, marking the largest smart metering rollout in Australia.

The project will replace mechanical water meters with advanced NB-IoT digital meters across South East Water's 27,000km pipe network.

This upgrade is expected to benefit 1.7 million customers in the service area stretching from Port Melbourne to Portsea and towards Gippsland.

Mark Elvins, South East Water acting general manager digital utility, said the partnership will save costs and bring sustainability benefits with digital meters, for customers, the community and the environment.

The new digital meters are projected to save an estimated five billion litres of water annually through improved network operation and customer leak detection.

Customers will be able to track and manage their water consumption using daily updated information, helping them identify usage spikes and gain greater insights into their water use.

TPG Telecom has developed an end-to-end IoT solution combining NB-IoT connectivity, SIM and device management to enable large-scale deployment of smart meters.

It allows South East Water to securely connect the NB-IoT smart meters, reduce costs and security risks, and provide critical monitoring across its extensive network.

"TPG Telecom is proud to be at the forefront of NB-IoT deployments with this significant advancement in water resource management, none of which would have been possible without the innovation and thought leadership of South East Water," Chris Russo, the telco's general manager of enterprise and govt customer sales and solutions said.
