The dark side of Apple

The dark side of Apple

Mike Daisey is a walking antidote to what some might call the cult of Apple.

Describing himself as a "monologist", Daisey has previously described Steve Jobs as a "tyrant", and Apple as a corporation "welded to a single human vision". Also, he's putting on a one man show at the Sydney Opera House about the dark side of Apple's most famous products.

Below is a video from an interview Daisey gave earlier this year with TechCrunch. His story is about "pulling back the veil" on the working conditions for the people who build Macbook Pros, iPads and other Apple devices. Daisey backs his argument with his claimed visit to factories creating the iconic products.

"Before I went, I really never thought about this stuff at all, " he told TechCrunch. "If you'd asked me how my MacBook Pro was made… in my mind I had this abstract picture of a Japanese automotive plant."

Dailey points out that his criticisms are not just about Apple. "There are no personal electronics that are made in a humane fashion," he told TechCrunch.

Whatever you believe, it's a thought worth consideration. For those interested in seeing Daisey's Apple critique in the flesh, he'll be performing his show "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs" at the Sydney Opera House from September 24 to October 2.
