Telstra clinches $23m deal as Komatsu preps for Azure

Telstra has clinched a $23 million contract delivering ICT services to Komatsu, including moving the equipment giant to a hybrid Microsoft Azure cloud platform this year.

The three-year contract extends an existing 15-year relationship and includes voice, data, and mobile as well as strategic ICT services covering M2M and “agile cloud technologies”.

Komatsu moved its infrastructure onto Telstra’s cloud platform in 2010 and now plans to move to a hybrid cloud arrangement this year, using private infrastructure as well as Azure for storage and additional workloads. The project will also see an enhancement to Komatsu’s disaster recovery capabilities.

The deal will also build on a recent trial allowing Komatsu to remotely download performance diagnostic data from more than 700 pieces of Komatsu equipment on mine sites. The data can be viewed in real time at the Komatsu inSite Centre in Fairfield in Sydney, without removing equipment from work sites.

Komatsu was described as an “early adopter” of technology by Telstra Global Enterprise and Services chief customer officer Martijn Blanken.

“The Telstra team has been working closely with Komatsu to co-create solutions that deliver the right service outcomes for the right investment,” he said.

“The new hybrid cloud model will give Komatsu a base platform that aligns to its current workloads, but also gives them the ability to scale and grow as its needs change over time.”
