Telstra buddies up with Vodafone NZ for security reseller deal

Telstra has forged a seemingly unlikely partnership with Vodafone in New Zealand to sell its security managed services to government and corporate customers across the Tasman.

The exclusive deal will see Vodafone NZ become a reseller for Telstra's Open Managed Security Services, a cloud-based platform that offers 24/7 security and can detect and notify customers of security threats and incidents in real-time.

“We are very excited to be able to expand our presence in New Zealand and announce our security services reseller arrangement with Vodafone New Zealand,” Telstra Enterprise group executive Michael Ebeid said.

“We are exploring similar arrangements in the managed services, cloud and digital services domains. Customers are already talking with us about how we can not only help them improve their operations in New Zealand but also reach global markets via our global capabilities.”

While Telstra and Vodafone directly compete against each other in Australia, the two telcos have worked together in New Zealand in the past. Vodafone acquired Telstra's New Zealand business, then called TelstraClear, in 2012, merging the two brands a year later.

One of Telstra's cyber security centres is located in Christchurch, which was built off the back of the acquisition of security analytics provider Cognevo in 2016.

Commenting on the partnership, Vodafone NZ head of security practice Warren Shera said: Working with Telstra means that we now have a powerful intelligence and analytics platform at our fingertips. The platform not only quickly identifies and explores cyber threats but is also able to see true mathematical anomalies.”

“Our team is passionate about providing clients with leading-edge security services and is focused on providing Kiwis with a safer and more secure environment to transact in, which this agreement will support in a powerful new way.”
