The Royal District Nursing Service will issue a tender for the supply of about 1000 mobile computer devices and integration services [PDF] to refresh its tablet PC fleet.
The home nursing provider, which makes about 1.7 million visits a year to clients, said it wanted to ensure its mobile computer program remained leading edge.
It represented the fifth generation of mobile technology at the service that first gave them to nurses in the 1990s, starting with the Apple MessagePad.
Nurses relied on tablets for transmission of appointment, clinical and client information and to access email, policies and procedures that guided clinical care and other medical information.
It was an opportune time for the nurses to tender for hardware with rumours swirling of an impending device from Apple that could fit such a niche.
"Many of our nurses begin the day from home and finish their working day at home," RDNS general manager of information services Ian Cash said.
"They spend their day on the road providing care for up to 15 clients. Their mobile computer is the critical link between them and client/clinical information."
The successful tenderer also needed to provide training and maintenance.
