SenSen Networks, a Melbourne-based Physical AI company, has signed a two-year, $889,000 contract with the Environment Protection Authority Victoria to trial an intelligent vehicle noise enforcement solution, extending the Company’s SenDISA platform into environmental enforcement for the first time.

SenDISA is SenSen’s flagship sensor-agnostic Physical AI system. Physical AI combines sensors and other hardware with advanced AI models to bring the benefits of AI into the real world.

SenDISA gathers and transforms information from multiple sensing technologies into actionable intelligence, court-grade evidence and automated operational workflows. Over the past decade the platform has powered government applications across curbside management, parking enforcement, heavy vehicle compliance, road safety and smart mobility.

The EPA Victoria deployment extends this same platform by integrating Class 1 acoustic sensing as a new intelligent input alongside computer vision, ANPR, GPS, RFID, LiDAR and geospatial intelligence – combining acoustic measurements with SenDISA’s existing analytics, evidence generation and enforcement workflows.

Port Phillip, Casey, Knox and Stonnington councils have already been chosen for the first phase of the trial, where four cameras will be installed. EPA in consultation with the councils will select street locations for the cameras based on logistical access and history of noisy vehicle reports.

The trial will extend to seven cameras in the second part of the trial.

The SenSen roadside acoustic cameras will detect noisy vehicles and capture their registration details allowing EPA to send a notice requiring their owners to submit the vehicle for noise testing at an accredited testing facility. Failure to submit to the test or to bring the vehicle into compliance can result in substantial fines of $1,221 for individuals and $6,105 for companies.

The councils were identified as areas where noisy vehicle hotspots exist, based on analysis of Victoria Police noisy vehicle reports submitted to EPA.

SenSen's MD and CEO Dr Subhash Challa said automating vehicle noise enforcement has challenged regulators worldwide for years because of the need for reliable, court-grade evidence.

"This contract demonstrates the strength of our SenDISA platform, enabling EPA Victoria to move from sensing to enforcement from day one," said Challa.

"Every new sensing modality integrated into SenDISA expands our addressable market without requiring a new software platform. We believe environmental enforcement is another important step in the evolution of SenDISA as governments increasingly adopt Physical AI to deliver smarter, safer and more sustainable communities."

EPA Victoria CEO Joss Crawford said finding the best supplier of the cameras is a crucial stage in the trial and it is "really pleasing" to see that a Victorian-based company has the necessary technical expertise and innovation to be the successful tender bidder.

"This trial creates the opportunity to test innovative technology to help get noisy vehicles off the roads and protect the community from excessive noise. The trial will go live later this year," said Crawford.
