Sydney Opera House tenders for network gear refresh

Sydney's Opera House has issued a tender for a network refresh, seeing proposals to replace Ethernet switches, Wi-Fi access points, firewalls and application switches and load balancers.

The world-renowned cultural institution is looking to renew its existing network, which faces issues such as aging equipment that impaces technical, security and operational aspects.

Furthermore, evolving expectations around the network's capabilities have prompted a reimagining of its potential to enhance the services it provides for the organisation, and its users.

Now, SOH wants to implement a network fabric with a software-defined overlay.

This should cover all wired and wireless (Wi-Fi) networking within the main Opera House precinct, along with satellite offices and to virtual private networking users connecting remotely.

Zero Trust is a consideration for the network strategy, but not pursued at this stage as many devices are not administrated by the Opera House and agents can't be installed on them, or theatrical devices which have no such options available.

The Opera House would like a network fabric with zones in which devices within the area have a common interest or profile, for theatrical productions, conferences, administrative functions or the network management itself.

In particular, the Opera House would like to see improved security through vendor support for patches, extensive policy control and improved traffic visibility.

It also wants greater responsiveness to user’s needs and requests and improved cost of service through improved management, systemisation and automation to replace manual tasks.

Improved sustainability through more contemporary construction and better energy
consumption management is also important.

The deadline for the tender is November 22, with an estimated date of decision of January 10 next year.
