Surface Pro price cut - but not in Australia

The price cut means customers in the US will pay $US100 less on each model, meaning the 64GB version now costs $US799, and the 128GB version $US899. The discounts will also apply to Canada, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Buying the Surface Pro "bundle" - throwing in Office Home and Student 2013, a two-year warranty, keyboard, sleeve and a screen protector - costs an additional $US310, down from $US480.

The company wouldn't confirm whether a similar discount would apply here, where the tablet has been on sale since June. The Surface Pro has been on sale in the US and Canada since February.

The news follows heavy discounts to the Surface RT tablet, both in the UK and abroad. Microsoft was forced to write off $US900 million on unsold Surface RT inventory, while a recent SEC filing showed the company has generated only $US853 million in device sales. CEO Steve Ballmer has reportedly admitted that the company had made too many tablets and that he wasn't happy with device sales.

The discounts suggest Microsoft is trying to clear the backlog ahead of a refresh. COO Kevin Turner showed off Microsoft’s roadmap at its annual Worldwide Partner Conference, including a slide promising an "update" to both its Surface tablets.
