Sun’s McNealy targets Red Hat

By on

Sun Microsystems' chief executive Scott McNealy appears to be looking for a new target, now that long-time adversary Microsoft agreed to pay Sun US$2 billion. Open source software provider Red Hat might just fill the bill.

"We're going to blow them [Red Hat] out of the water if we can," McNealy told a meeting of the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council last week, according to The Boston Globe. "We love Linux. We just don't love Red Hat."

Some users of Sun's Solaris operating system have been moving to Red Hat's Linux. While McNealy and Sun endorse Linux, they don't like Red Hat beating Solaris in competitive situations.

McNealy said that after Red Hat delivers "free" Linux to customers, it charges high prices for customer service and support. "You can run Solaris for 20 to 30 percent of the cost of 'free,'" he said.
