Small businesses will have an opportunity to air their grievances and ask questions about the Government’s carbon price scheme this week as part of a webinar hosted by Australia's consumer watchdog.
The ACCC will hold the online meeting, hosted by its deputy chair Dr Michael Shaper, this Thursday for one hour from 10am.
Interested small business owners can register now to participate in the online seminar, which the ACCC said will provide guidance on carbon price claims and issues affecting business.
"While the ACCC is generally confident businesses understand their obligations, the webinar is a chance for them to find out more about their rights and responsibilities when making or considering carbon price claims," Schaper said in a statement.
The ACCC has previously warned businesses not to take advantage of the scheme by unjustly blaming the carbon tax for price hikes.
It recently launched a hotline and online claim form for the public to complain when they suspect false claims are being made about the carbon tax.
The scheme was launched on July 1 and will tax 500 of Australia’s largest carbon polluters. The ACCC has flagged potential $6000 fines or the possibility of legal action where claims have been found to be “false or misleading”.
Since its launch, the government initiative has already been hit by charlatans looking to rort companies of cash by offering carbon tax ‘credits’ or compensation.
The Government’s SCAMwatch website reported in May businesses were being targeted by scammers posing as government carbon tax officials, offering fake credits as compensation.
