Rockwell partner CNFiTech develops safety system for TfNSW

CNFiTech has implemented an advanced safety system at Transport for NSW's (TfNSW) new intercity fleet maintenance facility.

The Depot Personnel Protection System (DPPS) uses Rockwell Automation's GuardLogix platform to ensure safe movement of trains and protect staff working on the new Mariyung fleet.

Located at Kangy Angy near the Central Coast, the 500,000 m² depot supports TfNSW's modern Intercity trains that serve nearly 45 million passenger journeys annually across regional New South Wales.

"Implementing Rockwell Automation's GuardLogix platform meant that we could confidently deliver the required level of safety and control to TfNSW," Joe Dwyer, CNFiTech rail and automation manager, said.

"Protection of personnel was a key deliverable of this project, and Rockwell Automation's hardware was able to deliver optimum ongoing performance."

The system interfaces with automated derailment monitoring and implements a lock-out personnel system, preventing staff access to areas above trains while the traction system remains energised.

Much of CNFiTech's work can be redeployed to other rail maintenance facilities, providing value beyond the initial implementation.

CNFiTech was formed last year, when CNF and Associates merged with iTech Corporation, another electrical engineering firm.
