The power distribution unit (PDU) from the IT infrastructure management provider enables IT administrators to remotely control and obtain detailed information on energy consumed within their data centre, claimed Raritan.
Gary Hull, regional director, Raritan A/NZ told CRN the product comes at a critical time for data centre managers as the cost of electricity rises.
“There is greater urgency in organisations to cool data centre environments. The cost in involved is significant,” he said.
In a recently conducted survey, Raritan discovered that nine out of ten IT managers are in the dark about the power consumption of their IT infrastructure.
“Organisations are not aware of where their power is being consumed, which devices across their infrastructure are consuming power and ultimately the cost of powering that specific device,” he explained. “You can only manage what you can measure … and organisations are finding they can save power by putting servers in hibernation outside of work hours.”
Hull added that unless a Green solution addresses a pain point it won’t succeed in the current IT climate. Consequently, the Dominion PX is being driven in the local market as a remote power management solution with Green benefits as opposed to purely a ‘Green IT solution’.
“We’re emphasising the fact that it provides remote access to mission critical infrastructure and management on power consumption … it’s a pretty compelling Green solution that also addresses emerging pain points,” he said.
Referring to ways the Australian channel can benefit, Hull added: “Resellers are looking to address the pain points of organisations, so we put the tools in their hands.”
Looking at other so-called Green technologies, Hull commented that a common misconception is to view virtualisation as an environmentally friendly solution.
“Virtualising the blade server and going from 10 to 20 percent capacity to 80 percent capacity has implications in terms of heated devices that require greater cooling, which in turn means greater power consumption. On the up side you can reduce the cost of acquiring hardware,” he said.
Raritan is presently collaborating with government departments to devise levels of certification for Australian organisations, stated Hull. Initiatives such as the Australian Building Greenhouse Rating [ABGR] standard implemented and devised by the Department of the Environment NSW is bringing the issue of achieving compliance with by-laws front of mind for businesses.
