Optus will replace Telstra as the new managed mobility services provider for the NSW Department of Finance and Services in a deal understood to be worth at least $1.3 million initially.
NSW shared services agency ServiceFirst went to tender in May for an outsourcer to provide a mobility service for potential use across 40 government agencies.
Optus will provide device, application, security, software and fleet management, as well as carriage services.
ServiceFirst will provide the option for users to migrate off existing carrier contracts and onto the Optus offering, but only when existing contracts expire -to "avoid unnecessary termination costs", a DFS spokesperson said.
Optus will also manage users who choose to remain with other providers.
Minister for Finance and Services Andrew Constance said the new contract had saved the state government 50 percent on its mobile service costs.
“The new arrangement includes the option of a significantly reduced fixed monthly fee for all local, national, mobile and SMS services. This removes the complexity of having to select the most economical plan across a diverse workforce,” he said in a statement.
ServiceFirst’s current mobile environment covers around 1000 users across 300 sites. DFS said there was no set number of users under the deal.
"Users will be serviced .. as new requests for service are received or when existing contracts on devices expire," a spokesperson said.
The new Optus arrangement will initially be used by the Finance department and ServiceFirst-supported agencies, but is likely to later become available across whole-of-government.
NSW agencies under ServiceFirst use a mix of mobile devices, using BlackBerry, Nokia, Apple, Android and Windows Phone operating systems.
