Optus plucks $60m airline deal from Telstra

Optus Business has signed a $60 million communications contract with airline company Virgin Australia.

Under the five-year agreement, Optus will provide Virgin Australia with telecommunications and managed services over its data network. The contract covers domestic services, such as Virgin's WAN and data centre operations and other international managed services needs.

Optus confirmed to CRN that the domestic component of the contract was previously held by Telstra. The company had to meet a wide range of criteria to win the contract, such as its communication capabilities in regional areas.

Optus Business managing director John Paitaridis said the contract validates the company's year-long restructuring efforts.

"This win is a further proof point of our recent restructure to bring together all our people, assets and capabilities into one organisation, highlighting our differentiation and absolute commitment to serving our business and government customers," Paitaridis said.

"We believe Optus Business can deliver a true one-stop-shop customer experience and our new five-year agreement with Virgin Australia reinforces our credentials in this space.”

The contract with Virgin Australia is the most recent in a string of wins for Optus Business.

In September the communications company signed a $530 million services deal with ANZ bank, an almost $30 million deal with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and in early October it become the mobility provider for the NSW Department of Finance and Services
