Oprah gives away computers to Sydney school

Oprah Winfrey has given away computers to students and teachers of Canterbury Boys' High during the taping of her first Australian show in Sydney today.

The show invited 400 students from the south-west Sydney high school to the Sydney Opera House where Oprah made the announcement.

A NSW Department of Education spokesman told CRN that each teacher and student at the school would receive a free computer.

Another ten computers were donated to the school's library.

Oprah also reportedly announced a $1 million upgrade to the school's library and music room.

As for the type and configuration of the units, the spokesman said the show's producers would be in touch with the school directly.

Media reports claimed the computers were sponsored by HP and Microsoft. CRN has sought confirmation from the vendors.

The school and the Department were unaware of the planned giveaway. The Department spokesman said the school had won a competition to watch the taping of the show.

The show was part of Oprah's week long Ultimate Australian Adventure tour around Australia for its 25th and final year.
