NTT claims world first 'pay-per-use' network virtualisation

NTT Communications is claiming to be the first provider to commercialise network functions virtualisation (NFV) on a global scale, with the announcement of instant activation and pay-per-use for its network cloud services.

"While many industry experts and service providers have long been speaking about the potential of NFV, we are excited to become the first service providers to commercialise NFV-enabled services on a global scale," said Takashi Ooi, NTT Communications' vice president of enterprise network service.

CRN contacted the Australian arm, NTT Com ICT Solutions, but a spokesperson said the company was not ready to comment on local availability.

The announcement out of NTT's Tokyo headquarters said that "cloud-based network services can be deployed and managed via an SDN-enabled customer portal" and customers can "instantly activate services when and where needed".

"Service deployments that took months now take only minutes. Configuration changes that took weeks can now be done in real time," said the statement.

The new SDN services are available "via a pay-per-use model".

"These services free the enterprise from investing in and managing a multitude of dedicated network appliances for globally distributed offices," said NTT Communications' announcement.

Ooi said that by applying NFV over its international networking centres NTT is now able to "deliver a variety of network functions, such as firewall and application acceleration for branch offices, from our network cloud."
