Nokia joins University of Technology Sydney's Rapido lab to develop business IoT applications on 5G

Nokia is set to join the University of Technology Sydney in a new technology development unit specifically set up to develop IoT-based business applications on high-speed technologies such as 5G.

The partnership with UTS: Rapido will see Nokia work on engineering projects with the aim of ensuring future networks are equipped to deal with challenges faced by service providers and enterprises.

The agreement, a signed memorandum of understanding between UTS and Nokia, covers the establishment of a new development and training facility at UTS, for which Nokia will provide IP routing, optical, fixed and 4G and 5G mobile network components and applications and analytics platforms for project work and training. Nokia will also participate on the UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT’s advisory board.

Myriam Amielh, associate dean of external engagement at UTS, said the university aimed to link with industrial innovators and help develop viable products and solutions with advanced technologies.

“This association will allow us to contribute our expertise in areas such as 5G, IoT and data analytics, through UTS: Rapido, to help Nokia's customers unlock the potential of emerging digital capabilities," she said.

Nokia’s Oceania head Ray Owen said the collaboration would allow the sharing of expertise and technologies.

"The successful implementation of IoT and the connectivity of potentially billions of devices will rely on the deployment of technologies such as enhanced 4G and high-speed, low-latency 5G,” he said.

“[Together] we will benefit from gaining even greater insight into how IoT can be applied to solve the real-world issues of our customers."

One of Rapido’s first projects will have researchers integrating 3D video filmed on Nokia’s 360 OZO camera into the UTS 3D Data Arena, an interactive data visualisation installation that combines software, high-performance computing and film visual effects techniques to project displays onto a 10m diameter cylindrical screen.

Rapido is focused on research on data analytics, cyber security, 5G and IoT. Nokia and UTS have worked together for more than 15 years.
