NCR Australia opens up POS systems to developers

Point-of-sale vendor NCR is making it easier for third party software developers to connect their applications to its widely-used retail technology in Australia.

NCR, whose customers include Coles and Woolworths, has launched the Retail One ecommerce "hub" - a strategy to link retailers’ legacy systems to NCR and partners' ecommerce and cloud solutions.

The aim with Retail One is to allow connections to ecommerce, click and collect systems, digital coupons and other components of “omni-channel” retailing, without the expense of replacing their legacy technology.

Australia is one of the first countries where Retail One will make its debut. Retail One will use Microsoft Azure, but is also designed with on-premises systems in mind.

The launch, announced at the NCR Synergy event in Orlando, is an opportunity for third party software developers. Rather than creating ad hoc point solutions, developers will be able to create software once and use APIs to integrate it across NCR’s product range, including multiple types of POS systems.

NCR has been reinventing itself as a software company, aiming to move beyond ATMs and checkout machines into areas like cloud, mobile and big data.
