NBN Co has revealed that data consumption for the month of December is set to be 21 percent higher than the average yearly data usage for the rest of the year.
The network provider said households were predicted to consume 245 GB of data compared to the average 203 GB. It is also one-third more from December last year at 183 GB, or close to double from 2015 at 128 GB.
“In December, we typically see the largest amount of data consumed on the NBN access network as connected Australians take advantage of increased downtime during the summer break to; catch up online with family and friends; get their hands on new smart devices and stream content,” NBN Co chief technology officer Ray Owen said.
“To ensure people have their broadband set-up for a summer of streaming and connecting, we encourage them to do their research to ensure they’re on the right speed and data plan for their streaming requirements, as well as take some simple steps such as checking their modem set up.”
The network provider also cited its commissioned Connecting Australia report, with NBN customers using the internet for online entertainment 23 percent more than those not connected, while 30 percent of Australians are expected to use video conferencing services within the month.
Telsyte managing director Foad Fadaghi said online streaming services have seen increased membership, with NBN users sing 22 per cent more data per month than those not yet connected.
“Australia’s subscription video on demand (SVOD) market grew by over 50 percent last year, with Australians taking up over 9.1 million subscriptions over the twelve months to June 2018,” Fadaghi said.
“This equates to around 43 per cent of households having at least one streaming service, an incredible rate of adoption given local services only started to became widely available in 2014.”
