Motorola's square phone: the shape of things to come?

Called the Flipout, the phone runs Android 2.1, supports Microsoft Exchange server and will be Adobe Flash friendly. Key specs include a 2.8-inch screen with 320 x 240 resolution, QWERTY keyboard, GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and a 3 megapixel camera with digital zoom. On the storage front the Flipout includes 512 MB of internal memory and a 2GB SD card-- expandable up to 32GB.

While a square-shaped handheld device might strike some people as quite literally a handful, Motorola has managed to shave the size down to a mere 67mm x 67 mm, so that in theory, it will sit comfortably in most people's palm.

As with the DEXT and Backflip, Flipout has the Motoblur feature is designed to sync email, contacts and social networking content into a single interface, while also maintaining on online backup of user's information. The phones GPS also allows users to Geo-tag their photos.

The Flipout will launch in Europe in the coming weeks, but there's no word on a U.S. launch date. Pricing is yet to be announced.

The strangely shaped phone follows the launch of several other odd-shaped phones overseas, including Microsoft's Kin One, which which is rounded in shape, resembling more the shape of a rock or pebble, rather than a rectangular phone.

Overseas, other square or non-conventionally shaped phones include the Samsung Gloss, and LG Lotus.
