Motion Computing acquired by rival Xplore

Rugged tablet vendor Xplore Technologies will buy the assets of Motion Computing and has revealed plans to extend its business via Motion’s international channel, which includes Australia.

Xplore will acquire the fellow Texas-based company in a deal worth approximately US$9 million, plus take on around US$7 million in net liabilities. The deal closed on 17 April.

Motion turned over US$83 million and made an unaudited net loss of US$7 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2014, according to unaudited results.

Nearly 50 percent of Motion’s business is outside the US, including sectors like law enforcement and manufacturing. Xplore plans to participate in these markets with the acquisition of Motion.

The goal will be to create the “best and broadest line of rugged tablets for the enterprise market,” according to Xplore chairman and chief executive officer Philip Sassower.

“Together we will address a broader range of customer needs and provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for rugged tablets.”

Motion Computing counts Main Road Western Australia as a customer, with more than 200 units rolled out in 2012 along with tailored mounting for around 200 vehicles. Around 110 Motion tablets are also reportedly used by City of Charles Sturt.

The vendor released its R12 Rugged Platform in Australia in April last year. Australian distributors include Dicker Data and Datanet.
