With less than a month to go before Windows XP officially comes out of support, Microsoft has partnered with Laplink to provide Windows XP users with a free data migration tool.
Laplink PCmover Express for Windows XP copies files and settings from a Windows XP PC to a new device running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
For enterprise users, Microsoft is recommending the User State Migration Tool.
To use the application, you need your old Windows XP computer and your new Windows 7 or later PC both connected to the Internet.
After downloading the software onto the new PC and the old Windows XP computer a step-by-step wizard guides the process. You can opt to transfer all or selected folders, user profiles, and settings from your old Windows XP computer to your new PC. The free data transfer will not migrate your apps.
Personalised settings and preferences on your new PC won’t be affected when you transfer your data.
PCmover Express is compatible with Active Directory and will fully support migrating domain users although new PCs will need to be added to a domain just like any new system regardless of how the user's data has been migrated to the device.
