Microsoft demos Windows Holographic

We’ve been gagging to see and hear more about these futuristic holographic glasses since Microsoft first dangled them before our eyes in January, now we finally get the full skinny at the Microsoft Build 2015 conference.

The world’s first and only holographic computer was demonstrated on stage with the user customising the space in front of him.

Apps, straight from Windows 10 appeared in front of the user. We saw a video player on one wall, Skype on another, a robot friend scuttling along the floor and a weather app sitting on a coffee table.

Using Air Tap the user can move these around, pull up the start menu or size and scale to as big as they like. You can take the apps with you too, so if you’re watching a movie and have to get up it’ll follow if you say “follow me”.

It certainly was an impressive demo and as Microsoft works with developers there could be an exciting number of uses - from the medical industry, art, engineering or entertainment - as the digital world mixes with real life.

Windows holographic can also scan environments and work with Windows IoT. PCPro was treated to a demo of a user controlling a robot by tapping the ground. The B-15 robot dutifully moved to the command, something not just fun to look at but could be very useful in trades such as manufacturing or military scenarios where robots are used.
