Victoria has launched its free wi-fi network that will eventually span 600,000 square metres in Melbourne, Bendigo and Ballarat.
Starting from Wednesday, Victorians will have wi-fi access to the $6.7 million network at Melbourne CBD train stations, the Bourke St Mall, Queen Victoria Market and South Wharf Promenade. Bendigo and Ballarat have been trialling the network since December 2015, and have already logged one million sessions, according the Victorian government.
Users will have 250MB of data per day without having to sign in or receive pop-up ads.
TPG will manage the network for the next five years, though the deal was originally won by iiNet in 2014. Responsibility for the network was transferred to TPG when the company acquired iiNet in 2015 for $1.56 billion.
A government spokesperson told CRN that TPG are rolling out the newest Cisco 802.11ac wi-fi access points after a 60 percent increase in fibre connected access points from the initial design.
The network is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
