Brisbane headquartered technology firm Madison Technologies has won the Artificial Intelligence Award at Cisco's Global Partner Innovation Challenge for its innovative rail crossing safety system.
The Camera-as-a-Sensor solution uses artificial intelligence to monitor pedestrian and vehicle behaviour at railway crossings, providing real-time alerts to operators about unsafe conditions.
This marks Madison Technologies' second win at the competition, following its success in the Global Digital Sustainability Challenge category in 2022.
The system combines Cisco's Meraki MV52 cameras, industrial IoT routers, and NVIDIA edge computing technology to enhance safety at level crossings.
"We are incredibly proud to be recognised by Cisco for our commitment to innovation in safety technology", said Paul Calabro, chief executive officer of Madison Technologies.
"Our partnership with Cisco uniquely positions us at the forefront of integrating IoT into OT environments, where safety and operational reliability are paramount", said Daniel Stuckey, Cisco program lead at Madison Technologies.
TrackSAFE Foundation data shows Australia recorded 1426 rail fatalities between 2016 and 2023, including 165 vehicle collisions and 30 pedestrian accidents at level crossings.
The solution addresses limitations of traditional rail safety systems, which rely on basic automation without detecting specific risks.
The award was announced at the Cisco Partner Summit 2024 in Los Angeles, where AI-powered solutions featured in 73 per cent of submissions.
