Lenovo refreshes NSW Education Department servers

Lenovo won a contract with the NSW Department of Education for new servers to house the department's SAP HANA infrastructure.

The $2.1 million contract is for the provision of 15 2TB System x3850 X6s and three 4TB System x3850 X6s. This servers were originally part of IBM's System X range acquired by Lenovo in January 2014.

The department confirmed that the previous servers were IBM's.

This is a new contract with the department and the new servers will "better service the financial needs of the department", a spokesperson told CRN.

The contract duration is for four years and, according to the department, Lenovo provided the best value for money.

According to the contract award notice, the work will be carried out at the Australian Technology Park, in Sydney.

Lenovo has declined to comment.

Lenovo has recently partnered with Nimble in an effort to become a data centre powerhouse. Lenovo started this move in 2012 with an agreement with EMC to jointly develop VSPEX reference architectures for converged infrastructure. However, the partnership ended before the Dell acquisition.

Another move to establish a presence in this market was Lenovo's acquisition of IBM's x86-based server business in 2014.
