Lego signs up third-party robot developers
Lego has announced a partnership with HiTechnic Products that allows the computer and robotics manufacturer to make certified hardware accessories for the newly-released Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics toolset.

The third-party licensing agreement allows HiTechnic to develop and market compatible accessory sensors that are complementary to the look, style and function of the NXT toolset.

HiTechnic's sensors will also integrate within the NXT software programming environment.

The first third-party device, a digital compass sensor which provides a magnetic heading that can be used for navigation and orientation of NXT robots, is scheduled for release in late September.

An RGB colour sensor that allows robots to identify and respond to the colour of a target is scheduled to follow later this year.

Stephen Barker, of HiTechnic said, "additional components such as the compass and RBG colour sensors will challenge the growing community of hobbyists who are eager to push the platform in new ways."
