Kroll launches subs-based data wiping

Data recovery specialist Kroll Ontrack announced a new subscription-based pricing model for SME's which it says includes a cost-effective solution for data wiping. Pricing for the new service begins at $99.95 for companies with less than 50 employees.

Explaining the rationale for the announcement a company statement referenced recent research by the Ponemon Institute in the United States which revealed  that 55 percent of respondents had experienced a data breach, almost all involving compromised electronic records that could have been protected had data been wiped.

With the new subscription offering  customers can purchase Ontrack Eraser 4.0 for an unlimited number of users and data erasures for a full year.  This contrasts with the more familiar approach whereby companies pay on a standard pay-per-erase basis.

“For small and medium-sized companies, the purchase price for data erasure software can be high. This, coupled with the traditional cost per erase model can put corporations over budget very quickly,” said Adrian Briscoe, general manager – APAC, Kroll Ontrack. “By providing our customers with a simple, flexible and affordable do-it-yourself option, we’re able to help corporations of all sizes protect their business.”

There are four components to the offering. VMware Drive Wiping provides the ability to delete data from VMware machines. Kroll Ontrack said this ensures corporations are securely deleting data from their virtual environments and addressing the complete scope of their IT environment. Secondly  an enhanced capacity to perform over 200 concurrent device erasures providing maximum. Thirdly, the company will offer improved system reporting that can denote the hard drive make, serial number and model number, as well as the wipe algorithm applied to accomplish any wiping job, which is important for compliance.  And finally new system authentication functionality to check  the erasure is conducted in the correct manner by the appropriate individual.
