Jim's puts D-Link kit in Queensland beach resort

D-Link partner Jim's Computer House has won a deal to overhaul the wireless network at the Coolum Beach Getaway Resort in Queensland.

The partner and vendor has installed two commercial grade outdoor and one indoor access point with external omni-directional antennas to achieve wireless coverage inside all 18 holiday units.

A DSA-3600 Multi-Service Business Gateway was also installed to provide multiple billing options for different usage of the Internet.

D-Link said in a statement the implementation was also simplified by its Power over Ethernet (PoE) injectors "saving costs by reusing internal general power outlets".

The D-Link kit replaced a service that had previously run using only a consumer-grade wireless router, which one of the resort's resident managers Murray Noyce said was a free but "unreliable" service with coverage limited to only three-quarters of the apartments.

"The guests weren't getting good reception and the connection was very prone to dropping off," Noyce said.

"The problem was that the signal wasn't reliable as the system wasn't designed to cope with the amount of clients being connected. Guests resorted to sitting on their balcony's to obtain a signal strong enough for a sustained connection.

"They weren't able to sit inside the holiday units using their laptops and in certain parts of the complex they weren't able to get a connection at all."

The resort was "continually embarrassed by not providing a reliable internet service for their guests and subsequently unable to charge for its use," it said in a statement.

Jim's Computer House is based in Noosa.

It was claimed that since buying the D-Link kit, coverage extended to surrounding areas "allowing Coolum Beach Getaway Resort to gain additional revenue by charging the guests of neighbouring resorts for Internet access."
