Intel forced to recall smartwatches worldwide

Intel has been forced to recall all of its Basic Peak smartwatches worldwide due to risk of overheating.

The company notified customers on 13 June that some users experience burns or blisters while wearing the watch. A software update was planned to fix the issue, but was never released.

Intel senior vice president and general manager Josh Walden said only 0.2 percent of watches were affected, but all customers worldwide would be refunded.

"On behalf of the Basis Science team, I want to personally apologise for this situation. We know that many of you love using your Basis Peak watches and have made it part of your daily lives, and we are very sorry for the disruption this will cause you," said Walden.

The watch was sold online in Australia from 2014 for US$139 to US$199 or US$344 for the titanium model. It is not known how many devices were sold worldwide.

Intel has immediately stopped supporting the Basis Peak and will allow users to access their data until 31 December 2016 before services are shut down completely.

More information on how to return the device is available on Basis' website. Basis' online store is also unavailable at the time of publishing.
