Huawei CEO Ken Hu has called for greater enforcement of intellectual property (IP) protection in a speech to Global Innovation Index for 2013 event in Shenzhen today.
“Only through effective intellectual property protection can science and technology innovators be rewarded for the fruits of their labours," said Hu.
"By doing so, their rights and innovative spirit can be protected and the momentum can be maintained. Protecting IP rights is a necessary means to maintain market integrity and encourage enterprises to invest more."
The argument has particular resonance given Western complaints about lack of IP protection for companies operating in China.
Hu spoke out in support of further trade liberalisation, making the argument only markets encouraging open and fair trade and promoting competition can truly deliver innovative development.
He also said there are two fundamental reasons for rapid social and economic development in the last 200 years: “First is the advancement of technologies, second more importantly is that open trade facilitated global resource reallocation and industry restructuring, maximizing the utilization of technical innovations.”
Hu is one of three company executives who rotate into the CEO role every six months.
