HTC planning "disruptive" tablet, smartwatch

HTC plans on growing its device ecosystem by adding smartphones and tablets.

Speaking to the Financial Times, HTC CEO Peter Chou and chairman Cher Wang have revealed that HTC is working on a new tablet device – and that current-gen wearable gadgets like smartwatches are "gimmick" devices.

Despite HTC's current absence from the tablet market, Cher Wang hints that a new device is in the works, saying that, “When the [HTC] tablet comes out it will be something nice and disruptive.” HTC has recently made moves towards devices with larger screens, launching the 5.9in HTC One Max to considerable acclaim.

Smartwatches and other wearable devices are high on most tech brand’s agendas – and HTC is no exception, with Bloomberg reporting that it's working on an Android smartwatch with a camera.

Mr Chou calls out “version one” and “gimmick” wearable devices in his FT interview, noting that “It has to meet a need, otherwise if it’s just a gimmick or concept; it’s not for people’s day-to-day lives. That is an opportunity for us” he said.

Ms Wang went on to say that “there are a lot of devices to innovate... Ubiquitous intelligence is not just wearables” – suggesting that HTC plans to wait for the other major tech brands to play their wearable cards first, before committing to any wrist-wrapping accessories.

If HTC were to launch a tablet with the same quality feel as its highly praised One series, would you get in line for one – or has HTC missed the boat? Let us know on Twitter.
