Healius completes IT transformation in partnership with VECTEC

Healius has completed a major IT transformation in partnership with Australian boutique integrator VECTEC, modernising its infrastructure to support AI-driven diagnostics, improve system reliability and reduce IT costs by up to $10 million.

With a network of 18 businesses, over 2000 pathology laboratories and 14 hospitals serving millions of patients through brands like Laverty, Dorevitch, QML and WDP, Healius plays a key role in Australia’s healthcare system, but its legacy infrastructure was limiting scalability, data accessibility, and overall performance, creating operational bottlenecks.

Healius had originally planned an infrastructure renewal, but engaged VECTEC to conduct a comprehensive assessment of its technology needs. The process uncovered scalability risks, vendor lock-in concerns, and inefficiencies in handling AI-driven medical imaging and real-time data processing.

VECTEC worked closely with Healius’ IT leadership to design a future-proofed infrastructure strategy based on identifying bottlenecks in performance, storage, and data management, assessing multiple platforms to determine the most flexible, scalable, and cost-effective approach.

Backed by data, needs analysis and technology benchmarking process, VECTEC recommended a future-ready architecture, with tiered storage by NetApp, fit for Healius' specific needs and its plans to scale.

Healius CTO Alex Larson said the company was hamstrung before it started this digital transformation.

“Our old hyper-converged infrastructure was failing, and with the increasing reliance on AI-powered diagnostics, we needed a solution that could scale with us," he said.

“Partnering with VECTEC gave us the confidence to make informed decisions about our infrastructure foundations and enhance our strategy, leading us to the solution that supports both current needs and future growth,."

VECTEC co-founder Jack McEvoy said the pace of AI adoption and infrastructure modernisation is accelerating across the enterprise landscape.

“CIOs are looking beyond short-term fixes to long-term strategic investments," he said.

"Our approach helps businesses like Healius make technology decisions that are tailored to them, to drive efficiency, resilience, and innovation—without unnecessary spend.”
