A new consultancy has started up, aiming to help Australian businesses navigate incoming sustainability reporting requirements, as thousands of organisations face stringent climate disclosure rules from January.

The new laws will initially apply to businesses with a turnover more than $500 million, and superfunds managing over $5 billion.

Warnings have already been issued that Australian businesses are not prepared for the strict disclosure rules coming into effect in just two months' time.

The founder of Climate & Decisions, Thierry Lotrian, echoed that sentiment.

"The upcoming mandatory climate reporting presents significant data and compliance challenges for businesses."

"Organisations must begin their preparations now to meet stringent requirements for financial-grade, auditable data", Lotrian said.

Lotrian departed Deloitte after more than 10 years to establish the Sydney-based firm, which aims to support over 6000 large businesses covered by Australia's new Sustainability Reporting Standards.

The venture addresses a critical skills shortage in professionals who understand both data analytics and sustainability requirements.

Climate & Decisions said it has partnered with Outsized to access independent consultants and industry experts, enabling rapid deployment of specialised talent.

This approach contrasts with traditional consulting firms, which often face challenges with internal complexity and departmental silos.

Lotrian previously led Deloitte's climate and sustainability alliance program along with the management consultants' data and AI initiatives.
