US media outlet ABC has gained what it claims is the first look inside the infamous Foxconn factory, most notable for its production of Apple products and claims of worker abuse.
The report details 12-hour working days at $US2 an hour, broken up into two one-hour meal breaks in which workers can purchase a plate of meat and rice for $US0.70.
According to the ABC, it takes five days and 325 sets of hands to assemble one iPad.
The company has been mired in controversy since 2010 when it first faced criticism over the suicides of 13 of its workers, believed to be linked with alleged harsh working conditions. Since that time, Foxconn has implemented safety nets to dissuade impulsive workers from committing the act.
Earlier this month Foxconn fell prey to an attack by hacker group SwaggSec over the reported worker abuse.
The group posted to the internet files which it said included passwords for Foxconn’s order processing system.
Three workers were also killed and 15 injured in May last year following an explosion at Foxconn’s southern China factory. Foxconn executive Jeremy Woo told the ABC Foxconn was "devastated" over the incident.
The move to allow media inside the factory follows the launch of an investigation by the global Fair Labor Association into working conditions at Apple's top eight Chinese suppliers earlier this month.
