Facebook Australia managing director quits

Facebook Australia managing director Stephen Scheeler has left the social media company after nearly two years at the helm.

Scheeler joined Facebook Australia as head of retail and automotive in 2013. He was promoted to the managing director role in July 2015 and also led the Instagram business in Australia and New Zealand.

Prior to joining Facebook, he was managing director for management consulting firm 10EQS.

Facebook group industry director Paul McCrory will lead the Australian business in the interim while Facebook searches for a permanent replacement, according to AdNews.

Scheeler's departure follows after a string of controversies hit Facebook's Australian advertising business.

According to an investigation by The Australian, data reporting practices had been corrupted, leading to artificially inflated key ad metrics. This gave an inaccurate key video-viewing metric to advertisers for a number of years.

Last week, Facebook agreed to have its metrics externally audited following admissions from the company that it had misrepresented metrics to advertisers.

Facebook has been contacted for comment.
