Ex-EMC and NetApp exec to head Australia for Violin Memory
Michael Burnie

Flash vendor Violin Memory has appointed storage veteran Michael Burnie as its country manager for ANZ.

In the newly created role Burnie will be responsible for leading Violin’s Australian sales team, maintaining existing customer relationships and building new relationships through business acquisitions.

Burnie told CRN he joined Violin for the challenge of moving into the next wave of storage technology.

“Everybody wants to go to flash storage, but they don’t understand what it will do for their business” he said.

“Our biggest challenge is not the competition, but education on flash. Disk will still have a place, but our biggest challenge is convincing customers flash is now prime storage.”

Burnie is noted as EMC Australia’s first managing director, launching its local operations in 1995. He went on to do the same for NetApp as Australian managing director in 2000.

His most recent position was with sTec as its senior vice president of sales before its acquisition by HGST in 2013. He joins Violin after a 12-month sabbatical in 2014.
