Equinix almost quadruples Australian profit

The local arm of global data centre provider Equinix has almost quadrupled its profit to nearly $8.5 million, with the 44th consecutive quarter of growth globally.

Equinix Australia's latest annual revenue was over $77.6 million, a 19 percent increase from the $65.2 million recorded in the previous year. Profit after tax ramped up 398 percent from the previous year's mark of $2.13 million.

The report to ASIC recorded "non recurring expenses" of $4.7 million in 2012, the absence of which contributed to the increased profit in 2013.

Recently appointed country manager Jeremy Deutsch told CRN that Equinix does not take questions on national financial results but he did comment on the regional and global performance.

"The Asia-Pacific region grew 20 percent, which obviously is very strong growth," said Deutsch. "This is [the global firm's] 44th quarter of consecutive growth on revenue."

Deutsch said Australia's growth came on the back of work such as stage 3 of the third Sydney data centre, named SY3. "We already have anchor tenants for that site including Net Logistics, which we announced earlier this year. Things are growing very strongly for us."

Equinix currently has "around 450 to 500 customers" in Australia across three data centres – Sydney 1, Sydney 2 and Sydney 3.

Deutsch told CRN that its first Melbourne facility will open later this year. "Vocus has already announced they're joining us in Melbourne."

Regionally, Deutsch said expansion would come through projects such as a new facility in Osaka, Japan and business relationships in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced Equinix as the data centre partner for its new ExpressRoute product. Deutsch said that the announcement was US-centric and there has been no local movement on ExpressRoute.
