Dimension Data has landed a deal to roll out the entire IT infrastructure for the new $550 million Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) at Port of Melbourne’s Webb Dock East.
The rollout includes more than 60 Cisco wireless access points, physical connectivity to the data centre, fibre cabling and a custom-grade CCTV network.
In addition, Dimension Data will deploy the on-site data centre and provide infrastructure-as-a-service for testing and development from its Melbourne managed cloud platform.
According to Dimension Data, the terminal will be “one of the most automated and advanced container terminals in the world.” VICT expects to handle one million unit containers per year using an automated system to transfer containers between ships and trucks autonomously.
The terminal is expected to begin operating by the end of 2016.
VICT chief executive Anders Dømmestrup said Dimension Data was chosen for its experience with working on tight construction schedules.
“Ultimately, the technical infrastructure will be supporting all of VICT’s mission critical information systems and we trust Dimension Data to deliver our distinct requirements and draw on the unique expertise of its global counterparts,” he said.
The rollout is the second significant Cisco deployment announced since November, with Dimension Data winning a deal to deploy 500 Cisco wi-fi access points in Melbourne’s Deakin University.
