The Melbourne Stars cricket franchise is searching for a new jersey sponsor after incumbent Dick Smith went into administration Tuesday morning.
As one of the glamour teams of the Big Bash League, the Stars have been enjoying the exposure from the huge popularity of domestic Twenty20 this summer. Just last weekend, the team broke records hosting more than 80,000 fans against its cross-town rival Melbourne Renegades.
Unfortunately, its major sponsor has been enduring opposite fortunes in the electronics retail industry. Dick Smith entered voluntary administration this morning after almost 50 years of trading.
Melbourne Stars chief executive Clint Cooper told Fairfax Media that it had been “an incredible week".
"We've gone from an unbelievable high of drawing over 80,000 to the MCG to finding out that our principal partner, and a relationship we had been fostering for a number of years, has gone into formal administration."
CRN contacted the cricket franchise but had not received a response at the time of writing. The Stars’ next match is against Hobart Hurricanes in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
"With the run to the finals still to come, we think there are a number of Australian brands that would see the value of jumping on board right when the Big Bash, and the Melbourne Stars, are hitting a high," Cooper said.
