Dell reseller deploys 40 servers for Aussie SFX studio

Reseller VInet has deployed Dell server infrastructure for Australian SFX studio, Rising Sun Pictures.

Based in Adelaide, the Oscar-nominated studio provided special effects for such Hollywood blockbusters as The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings and Gravity.

VInet rolled out 40 Dell PowerEdge FC630 servers across Rising Sun's 10 PowerEdge FX2 chassis. The deal also includes Dell Precision T7810 workstations and ProSupport for Enterprise.

Rising Sun was looking for better performance and density from its rendering environment built on outdated hardware. VInet also had to provide a future-proof solution so Rising Sun could keep up to date on technology in the competitive visual effects industry.

The new solution allows artists to focus on visual effects instead of the technology behind it, said the studio's director of engineering, Mark Day. The managed services aspect from VInet also gives Rising Sun the option to change server modules down the line when Dell introduces a new model.

“The Dell PowerEdge FX2 solution was a great fit because the technology is modular and very flexible, which allowed us to protect our investment with the option of changing the server modules down the line as Dell brings new servers on stream,” said Day.

“Now we can play a greater role in the storytelling process because our artists have reliable Dell technology that opens up new opportunities for movie visual effects.”

Dell yesterday announced upgrades to the PowerEdge FX2 portfolio, including tools for easier access to on site or global servers and faster on-boarding of IT services.

VInet has offices in Sydney and Adelaide. Its vendor partners include Dell, Nutanix, Microsoft and VMware.
