Dell offers cheap new handheld

Dell has introduced a new handheld with optional integrated 802.11b wireless capability priced from US$379.

The new Dell Axim X3i is an update of a handheld line reportedly selling well in the US. The wireless handheld has an Intel XScale processor and a Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC operating system.

The model has a 400MHz processor, 64 MB of SDRAM and 64 MB of ROM, SD slot and 3.5-inch transflective TFT color screen.

Dell is emphasising the Axim X3i's price point, which it claims is lower than Palm's Tungsten C. Tungsten C also has built-in Wi-Fi but costs around US$499.

Dell also announced two models without wireless. One costs US$379 for 400MHz of processing power, 64 MB of of SDRAM and 64 MB of ROM. The second costs US$229 for a 300MHz processor, 32 MB of SDRAM and 32 MB of ROM.

IDC research suggests that Dell came in just behind Palm, HP and Sony, with about seven percent of the US handheld market, in the second quarter of 2003.

Dell has reportedly shown "increasing willingness" to work with the US channel but did not respond to calls from CRN in the US for more information about its new products.
