Datacom takes heathy bite of Canberra software firm

Datacom has bought a 20 percent stake in Canberra company SmartWard, which develops software for automating nurse records in hospitals.

The investment follows a handful of other expansion moves by Datacom, including the acquisition of Origen Technology, the buyout of XciteLogic and integration of Red 11.

The national integrator will install and support SmartWard in major hospitals, as part of a long term strategy to invest in solutions for vertical markets.

Software is designed to reduce the amount of time nurses spend doing paperwork, allowing them in theory to spend more time caring for patients. It was trialed in 2013 at two campuses of Eastern Health in Melbourne, by Deakin University’s Centre for Clinical Nursing Research.

Datacom appears to be stepping up its efforts in the health sector, not only buying into SmartWard, but also creating a new business unit called Datacom Healthcare Solutions.

The new unit will be headed up by chief medical information officer Dr Keith Joe, “well-known” in the Australian and New Zealand healthcare sector.

Datacom told CRN about its expansion plans in 2013 following the buyout of Perth IT company XciteLogic. Earlier this year New Zealand based integrator bought local government software developer and integrator Origen Technology in New Zealand.

In March this year Datacom Systems WA also merged is operations with Western Australian reseller Red 11.
